Goodbye Britania – Welcome France
While I enjoyed the comfort of a nice ferry, kindly sponsored by P&O, here now s short reflection on day four, the toughest and most challenging so far. The essence – the government of Britain should be ashamed of the state of cycle paths and the general cycle infrastructure, and that especially in the south. Junk on the roads and paths made the day start with a puncture. Not a big thing, but in terms of motivation there can be better starts. At least I had a cracking sunrise to watch while fixing things, and the next town to check the pressure wasn’t too far away. Unfortunately no help in the first bike shop, and the second one was still closed. So it was breakfast at Sainsbury’s, but my all time favourite cookies were sold out. Bummer! Nevermind, the day got sweeter when I got my ferries booked in by Michelle from P&O, both the Dover to Calais and my journey back from Zeebrugge to Hull. Finally the bike shop was open and a nice guy lent me a track pump, and the bike was once again ready. From here things seemed perfect again, until I totally got lost in Grays. I was looking for the ferry from Tilbury to Gravesend, but neither Tilbury nor the ferry were signposted. I struggled to find any signs anyway, but finally managed to get on the boat. The ferry man was an old man, but very sweet, and plainly looking in his face made me smile again. From Gravesend it was time to speed up to get the 16.40 boat, but I still had a long way to go. The cyclepath on the road shoulder looked like it had never ever been cleared, but the important annoyance was all the glass dumped on it. I had no other chance then to take the main road, but at least this one had potholes! Regardless, after passing one town after another, I finally enjoyed the landscape and the houses tucked on those hils in Kent. The final 40km I had to take a dual carriageway, but finally made it to Dover. I treated myself to an ice cream, changed my booking for the ferrry to 18.35 and couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the white cliffs towering above the port. Not to mention the ferry port, which is huge! After a pleasant crossing I finally arrived in Calais, and treated me to a huge coffee. Another challenging but great day.
